The race for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has gotten hotter as former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has entered the race by picking up nomination forms to contest in the party’s flag bearer election slated for January 2026.
Dr Adutwum, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, will seek to lead the party into the 2028 general election.
Other contenders
He joins former MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong; former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong; MP for Abetifi, Bryan Acheampong, and former Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to contend for the position.
The Bosomtwe Member of Parliament is widely recognised for championing education reforms, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and expanding secondary education.
His entry into the flagbearer race is expected to stir debate within the NPP, with supporters pointing to his technocratic expertise and track record in public service.
Transformative journey
Speaking to the media after receiving the nomination forms, Dr Adutwum noted that his entry marked the beginning of a transformative journey to victory in 2028 for the NPP.
He was hopeful that delegates would elect him as the party’s flagbearer so that he could lead the party to the promised land.
“The land that our nation has been yearning for years, that our nation will become a prosperous one.
Our nation will wage war against poverty and win. That the poverty and deprivation will be over,” he stated.
He said he was focused on bringing technocratic expertise and “practical solutions” to Ghana’s challenges.
“We need a leader who understands how to transform our economy through education, innovation and job creation,” he said.
Self-reliant nation
Dr Adutwum, who is credited with expanding science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education, pledged to build a stronger and more self-reliant nation.
“That is what the campaign of 2028 will be about. It’ll be about a country that hasn’t been independent for many years.
We’ve done our very best. From the first to the current President, each has done something great.
Yet, we have a lot to do.
And that is what Adutwum’s presidency will be about.”
Dr Adutwum urged party members to back his bid to provide a better life for Ghanaians and make the future better than the present and the past.
