The Telecel Group has entered into a partnership with the government to train 100,000 young people in digital skills over the next four years under the One Million Coders Programme.
The agreement, sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on Thursday, strengthens national efforts to expand digital literacy and build a future-ready workforce.
The One Million Coders Programme, launched earlier this year by President John Dramani Mahama, aims to equip young Ghanaians with coding and digital competencies needed to thrive in the global technology ecosystem. Telecel’s contribution will be delivered through free access to its Startocode platform, a multilingual and self-paced digital learning suite.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, CEO of Telecel Group Moh Damush said the initiative is aligned with the company’s broader mission to support Africa’s digital evolution. “We believe aligning with the One Million Coders initiative will help us equip tens of thousands of young people with vital digital and coding skills for Ghana’s growing digital economy. And more importantly, empower the country to lead the future of the digital ecosystem that is already reshaping Africa,” he said.
Startocode combines interactive lessons with practical projects in areas such as web development, Python programming, data analytics and digital entrepreneurship. It has already trained thousands across Africa and is known for its accessibility to learners from diverse linguistic and educational backgrounds, particularly those in underserved regions.
The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, welcomed the collaboration and described it as a transformative step for national development. “The One Million Coders Programme is about unlocking the digital potential and creating more career pathways to sustainable livelihoods for our youth. We are proud to collaborate with forward-thinking partners like Telecel, who share our vision of inclusive digital empowerment,” he said.
Beyond technical training, the partnership will support mentorship and community engagement programmes to nurture a culture of continuous learning and innovation. It also aligns with Telecel Group’s broader corporate social responsibility commitments, which prioritise digital education, health development and environmental sustainability across its markets.
The MoU represents a shared pledge by both the government and Telecel Group to ensure that every Ghanaian has the opportunity to participate meaningfully in the digital economy. Stakeholders say it marks another milestone in Ghana’s quest to position itself as a leading technology hub in Africa.
