Access to public facilities for PWDs: GhIE complies with Act 715 with installation of elevator at Roman Ridge office…

As part of efforts to ensure that it complies with the Persons with Disability Act of 2006, Act 715, the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE), after 19 years of the Act coming into force, has now installed an elevator at the Engineering Centre building at Roman Ridge in Accra.

This is to make it easier for persons with disability (PWD) to access the upper floor of the building.

According to the immediate past President of the GhIE, Kwabena Bempong, he recalls how the 8th President of the Institution, Nana M. Asafo Boakye, who served from 1976 to 1977, often attended GhIE programmes with great difficulty due to mobility challenges.

“It was difficult watching our older colleagues being helped or carried upstairs just to attend programmes. I knew something had to change,” he said.

He said in April 2024, he reached out to a supplier and installer of elevators in Ghana to assist with the project, and the company responded.

In addition to that, other members supported financially with the installation of the elevator, and on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the current President of GhIE, Ludwig Annang Hesse supported by others officially inaugurated it.
