Champions League Results: Chelsea spoil José Mourinho’s homecoming; Bayern, Real Madrid roll, while Liverpool, Tottenham stumble…

An 18th minute own goal by Richard Ríos spoiled José Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge as Chelsea topped Benfica 1-0 during Matchday 2 of 2024/25 Champions League action.

It was an emotional return for “The Special One” to the club he led to three Premier League titles. The London crowd sang in his honor in the opening minutes, which was acknowledged by Mourinho.

A little later, the Chelsea faithful were cheering again, this time for a 1-0 lead.

Chelsea were the only Premier League side to earn a Champions League win on Tuesday, September 30.

Liverpool fell 1-0 to Galatasaray as Victor Oshimen’s 16th minute penalty was the difference.

Tottenham, meanwhile, drew 2-2 with Bodø/Glimt, thanks to an 89th minute own goal by Jostein Gundersen. Jens Petter Hauge put Bodø up 2-0 by the 66th minute, but that was answered by Micky van de Ven two minutes later.

Real Madrid was powered by a Kylian Mbappé hat trick during a 5-0 win over Kazakh side Kairat Almaty. Mbappé opened the scoring with a 25th minute penalty kick and then added goals in the 52nd and 73rd minutes.

Mbappé now has 60 career Champions League goals and he’s scored 11 times in eight games this month for club and country.

The hat trick was his fourth in his Champions League career, tying him for third all-time with Karim Benzema. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are tied for the most with eight.

In other matches, Harry Kane continued scoring with two more goals this season during Bayern Munich’s 5-1 victory over Pafos. Kane now has 14 Bundesliga and Champions League goals this season.

Antoine Griezmann became the first Atlético Madrid player to reach 200 career goal scores during their 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt. Griezmann scored his first goal for Atleti in September, 2014.

Also, Igor Paixão’s brace helped lead Marseille over Ajax 4-0 while Atalanta went down 1-0 to Club Brugge in the first half, but grabbed the three points thanks to second-half goals from Lazar Samardžić and Mario Pašalić.

Two goals from Lauturo Martínez and another from Denzel Dumfries were enough for Inter Milan to blank Slavia Prague 3-0 for their fifth straight victory.
