Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Saturday, December 13, 2025, paid an emotional visit to the home of the late iconic politician Simon Diedong Dombo, popularly known as S. D. Dombo.
The late Dombo, who represented Jirapa Lambussie as a Member of Parliament in the first Parliament of the First and Second Republics of Ghana on the ticket of the Northern People’s Party, was also a key figure in the New Patriotic Party’s founding tradition through the United Party, alongside stalwarts such as Dr K. A. Busia and J. B. Danquah.
As part of his campaign tour of the Upper West Region, Dr. Bawumia called on the Dombo family at their residence in Duori, where he was received by family members and traditional authorities.
Dr. Bawumia, who was accompanied by leading NPP figures in the region, including former Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery, and former Upper West Regional Minister, Hafiz Bin Salih, also visited the grave of the politician, educationist and traditional ruler.
The Chief of Duori and members of the Dombo family commended Dr. Bawumia for his consistent visits to pay respect to the family and to the memory of their son.
They wished him well in the upcoming party primaries and pledged their support and prayers for his victory, which they described as assured.
In October 2022, the Dombo family enskinned Dr. Bawumia, then Vice President of Ghana, with the chieftaincy title “Naa Lewa”, which translates as “the chief has returned”.
The enskinment took place during an official working visit to the Upper West Region, when Dr. Bawumia paid a courtesy call on the family.
Explaining the significance of the title, the Chief of Duori, Naa Dombo III, said Dr. Bawumia was honoured because he exhibited qualities associated with their late father and had re-established ties between the Dombo and Bawumia families.
